The Daily News - New details are emerging about the renovation of the Hickman Building, now to be known as The Commonwealth. The Commonwealth will feature 5,500 square feet of ground-floor retail, four floors of luxury apartments, and a mix of commercial tenants, including 18,500 square feet set aside for SouthernSun Asset Management. Vacant since 1971, the building is carefully being renovated to preserve as much of the original craftmanship as possible. Read more.
Architectural Record - The redevelopment of Crosstown Concourse is featured in the March issue of Architectural Record. The article states, "As cities grapple with the respective futures of their industrial pasts, they would do well to look at Crosstown Concourse. For this development, the vision was strong and swayed a diverse group of prospective tenants to get on board. From an environmental standpoint, the transformation of the Sears building into a successful venture like Crosstown Concourse turned a white elephant into green one." Read more.
Commercial Appeal - The Commercial Appeal featured the announcement of Crosstown Concourse being shortlisted for Architectural Review's New into Old awards. The $250 million Memphis renovation is the only project from the United States making the cut. Others are five from the United Kingdom, two from Sweden, and one each from Australia, the Netherlands, Qatar, China, India, Turkey, and Belgium.
"It really is about the extension of the life of a building by inserting new uses rather than tearing down and replacing it,'' said Frank Ricks, principal with LRK. Read more.
Architectural Review - Crosstown Concourse was selected to Architectural Review's shortlist of 15 adaptive reuse projects across the world for the AR New into Old awards. The shortlist was selected by an esteemed jury that includes British architects Michael and Patty Hopkins, co-founder of Neri & Hu, Lyndon Neri, and deputy chairman of the Twentieth Century Society, Timothy Brittain-Catlin.
Crosstown is the only project located in the U.S. to be selected to the shortlist.
The winning project along with any highly commended projects and finalists will be announced and published in the AR’s December/January issue at the end of the year. Read more.

The Commercial Appeal - Heating and cooling system maker Trane honored the Crosstown Concourse development team with a national Energy Efficiency Leader Award for 2017. Crosstown is aiming for LEED Platinum certification, which would make it the largest LEED Platinum-certified historic renovation building in the world. Read more.
Commercial Appeal - Construction work on the 91-year-old Hickman Building in Downtown Memphis will begin this summer. Vacant for nearly 50 years, the 100,000 square-foot building will house offices, apartments, and retail. LRK is providing architectural and interior design services for the renovation.

Memphis Business Journal - The Chisca on Main was recently named a finalist in the 5th annual Building Memphis Awards in the Best Renovations/Conversions category for large projects ($10M and over). The Building Memphis awards honor projects that have created a community impact in the areas of investment, jobs created and potential impact on a surrounding area, and it recognizes the major players involved in the projects, including owners, developers, brokers, architects/designers, engineers, contractors and financial lenders. “For the first four years the primary question was ‘You want to do what?’” said Tony Pellicciotti, principal with LRK Architects who has been working on the project for the past six and a half years. “We all knew this building was impossible to do. The Daily News - The Nineteenth Century Club, an 107-year-old mansion on Union Avenue, is being meticulously restored to its former grandeur. LRK's Tony Pellicciotti says the goal of the restoration was to put as many of the architectural elements back into the building because it was so grand and fabulous and fit the purpose of a club, which is similar to an upscale restaurant. The French-Asian restaurant, Izakaya, is set to open in the 16,000 square-foot building in November. Read more.
The Commercial Appeal - The Southern College of Optometry will open an 8,000-square-foot clinic on the second floor of the Crosstown Concourse. The patient-centered clinic will have 14 exam rooms and serve up to 14,000 patients a year. LRK is providing architecture services for the project. Read more.
The Daily News - A 450-seat theatre on the Crosstown Concourse campus will attract national acts and boost the local arts scene. LRK's design for the 28,000-square-foot building is notable for its flexibility with elements such as a sprung wood flood stage, retractable seating and a modular open floor allowing for any number of configurations from theater-in-the-round to a proscenium with raked seating. The Daily News – The YMCA will open its 11th Memphis-area branch in Crosstown Concourse in partnership with the Church Health Center. The 25,000-square-foot gym will open within the Church Health Center’s 150,000 square-foot headquarters early next year. Plans for the facility include fitness equipment, a walking track, group workout and dance classes, personal training, physical therapy, and programming for the intellectually disabled. LRK is providing architectural and interior design services for the Church Health Center and architectural, interior design, urban design, sustainability, and federal historic rehabilitation consulting for the overall Crosstown Concourse project. The Commercial Appeal – With the goal of energizing the emerging South Main Historic Arts District, the renovation of the 107-year-old United Warehouse building will begin in late September. Artspace South Main Lofts will include 58 affordable live/work units for artists and their families, community/gallery space, and an outdoor garden. BOMA Magazine – Featured in the January/February edition of BOMA Magazine, Crosstown Concourse is the latest high-profile adaptive reuse project to transform an old Sears distribution center, joining the ranks of Boston's Landmark Center, Midtown Exchange in Minneapolis, and Ponce City Market in Atlanta. Crosstown already has leasing commitments of 450,000 square feet from healthcare, education, and arts organizations. It will also feature 65,000 square feet of retail and 270 apartments. The mix of tenants was crucial to achieve the sense of community the developers desired.
