Urban Designer Danielle Lake and Landscape Designer Jessica Arias of Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects (MNLA) in New York were awarded first place for their design concept for Tillery Park (Urban Cleanliness Park Scenario) in AIA Austin’s Force-Majeure competition.
The design ideas competition focuses on contemporary issues that impact our lives both locally and nationally and is meant to serve as a tool that prompts intense thinking and tough discussion on how design can help mitigate crises.
Danielle and Jessica used their differing skills in architecture and landscape architecture as well as their overlapping interests in public space, equity, and social justice to design a winning entry. Their design envisions an Urban Cleanliness Park as a community anchor during times of normalcy yet has the capacity to become a source of stability during periods of uncertainty. With themes of resiliency, community, and sustainability, the park provides opportunities for recreation and resources for all East Austinites.
