A HUD Hope VI grant funded the transformation of Lauderdale Courts, a public housing project listed on the National Register of Historic Places, into Uptown Square, a less dense neighborhood of public and mixed-income apartments. The architectural integrity of the historic buildings was retained, while reducing the number of individual residences from 443 to 347. New streets in previously neglected courtyards link up with the city’s existing grid and reconnect Uptown Square to downtown Memphis.
